How To Refine Your Gut Instinct [A Warrior’s Secret Weapon]

Intuition. We all have it. Some more than others. Intuition is a very primitive yet effective aspect of decision making. All of the warriors that I’ve studied so far use it & train it. Using your gut-instinct, intuition, nut-instinct, whatever you want to call it, is well worth your time and effort.

Your unconscious mind processes billions of bits of information that your conscious mind wouldn’t be able to handle all at once. So when your intuition picks up on something kind of strange in the environment, it sends a signal (gut response, ache, tinge in the spine, the feeling that something isn’t right, etc).

This decision-making system is very useful because it has been programmed into our bodies over the course of evolution. It’s also very useful because the conscious mind can only handle a certain bandwidth of information.  Otherwise, you would go insane trying to process every bit of information consciously.

Intuition Can Save Your Life

In a video I did where I interviewed an Australian Special Forces Veteran, he told me a story illustrating the power of intuition and it’s role in saving his life:

He was on a patrol with his troops one day during one of his deployments. Things were going OK when he suddenly felt the hairs on the back of his neck rise. His intuition knew something was up. Instead of continuing with the patrol like he had been before, he had his men move forward in a slower & more careful way. Each soldier covered the movement of the next one. Shortly after his hunch,  an abandoned rifle was discovered leaning on a tree in an ambush position. The enemy had fled after seeing the number of Australian troops.

Training Your Intuition

These are some practices that I have personally used to enhance my intuition:

Meditation – Meditation trains you to silence the monkey brain AKA the constant series of chatter in your head. Once its quiet in there, your mind can process and pay attention to your environment more efficiently. This results in a finer tuned intuition.
Awareness – Awareness is simply being more aware of your environment and taking in all of the details. The point is to train your mind to pay closer attention to your environment. This ties in closely with meditation.

Journaling – Journaling helps you process information better. If you journal every night, you train your mind to be better at processing & reflecting. If you can effectively reflect on situations through journaling, you’ll be better at processing information & making judgments in the moment. Turning off social media and other distractions and just being in the moment when you’re driving or walking also helps you awaken to the inner world of intuition. The more distracted you are, the less likely you’ll be able to notice what your gut is trying to tell you. Don’t let social media dull your sharpest weapon:

Experience is also worth keeping in mind when it comes to training your intuition. The more experience you have in life, the more your intuition will be refined. There is a reason wisdom comes with age.

Keep in mind

Your gut is NOT always right. Trusting your gut should not become an end-all-be-all way of being. Sometimes your intuition might be off-target. When your intuition spikes, pay attention. But after that, it’s up to you…

The warrior lives life according to his gut instinct and dismisses it if he feels it isn’t on-target. Over time, the more refined it is, the better it will be & therefore the more you’ll be able to rely on it.
